Note to teachers: Both books deal with conflict & genocide in Sudan. Because there were multiple conflicts happening at the same time within Sudan (Darfur; South Sudan), it can get a bit confusing. To add to the confusion, South Sudan, which declared independence in 2011, has been suffering through its own civil war since independence. Here's a background video on Darfur conflict in Sudan that may help you understand better the historical settings for both books. (While this video focuses on Darfur, the same genocidal tactics were used by the Sudanese government in South Sudan.)
