My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

I read two fantastic books recently that both happened to deal with mental health issues. Both were thoughtful and realistic portrayals of the challenges people with mental illness face.
Challenger Deep by Neal Shusterman
Winner of the National Book Award for Young People
The novel explores the experience of 15-year-old, Caden Bosch, as he experiences a psychotic episode and is sent to a mental hospital for treatment. The author does a fantastic job intertwining the two worlds of Caden as he struggles with what is real and what is a delusion. Realistic and heartrending the reader feels as confused and lost as Caden at times. MS/HS Schizophrenia, Mental Illness, Family
The Rest Of Us Just Live Here by Patrick Ness
Mikey and his friends are not Indie kids; they are the background characters in the fantasy "chosen one to save the world" stories. While random weird stuff is going on in their town; they are just trying to graduate high school and figure out the whole life thing. But Mikey and his friends are pretty extraordinary in their own ordinary way. I liked the conceit of the story: the story of the ordinary background people usually found in the fantasy stories. I liked how the mental health issues (OCD and anorexia) were a part of the characters' lives but not their whole lives. I liked how there was conflict but also conversation. They talked to each other and were multifaceted characters. HS Fantasy, High School, Coming of Age, Relationships, Diverse, Mental Illness, GLBT

A great nonfiction book I read recently was Cat Sense: How the New Feline Science Can Make You a Better Friend to Your Pet by John W.S. Bradshaw. This book was very interesting. It looked at the history of cats and how cats most likely became domesticated. Unlike dogs, cats have not been easily domesticated. Cats became domesticated once we humans started storing grain and used semi-tame wild cats to help kill rodents. The author looked at the different kinds of cats from all over the world and how they are linked as well as some of the differences between cats and dogs in the domestication process. Other topics include cat's thinking and feelings, multiple cats living together, and the cat-human relationship. The author concludes the book looking at the future of cats and what he sees needs to be done to ensure cats remain with us as good pets. MS/HS/AD Science, Cats

A great middle school book I just finished is Codename Zero by Chris Rylander. Another book I read recently was book 2 in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas titled Crown of Midnight. This is the second book and you definitely need to have read the first to know what is going on and to get the most from the emotional impact of the story. We pick up the story with Celaena being named King's Champion (assassin) and as she begins her duties for the crown. The king has a list of suspected traitors working to overthrown the crown which he asks Celaena to kill. The first name on the list is a friend from her past. Things happen (no spoilers!) and secrets are revealed. Relationships develop and friendships are tested. Betrayal and death are involved. HS Violence -because the main character is an assassin. Assassin. Magic. Betrayal. Friendship. Romance. Politics. Fae.
