My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla.
But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly.
Maybe we can’t predict the future, but we can predict some things. For example, I am certainly going to fall in love with Olly. It’s almost certainly going to be a disaster.

I am the Weapon by Allen Zadoff
Teenage boy assassin begins to question whether he is working for the good guys or the bad guys during an intense assignment when he gets too close to his mark and the target. Very James Bondish--especially the most recent "Spectre" Bond who is questioning his desire to continue to be a spy. MS 8+/ HS

A great middle school book I just finished is Codename Zero by Chris Rylander. Carson is bored living in small town North Dakota where he is constantly pulling pranks to entertain himself when he gets pulled into a real life spy caper. There are some nice action scenes and a few twists towards the end. MS Spies, Humor, Friendship

Another book I read recently was book 2 in the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas titled Crown of Midnight. This is the second book and you definitely need to have read the first to know what is going on and to get the most from the emotional impact of the story. We pick up the story with Celaena being named King's Champion (assassin) and as she begins her duties for the crown. The king has a list of suspected traitors working to overthrown the crown which he asks Celaena to kill. The first name on the list is a friend from her past. Things happen (no spoilers!) and secrets are revealed. Relationships develop and friendships are tested. Betrayal and death are involved. HS Violence -because the main character is an assassin. Assassin. Magic. Betrayal. Friendship. Romance. Politics. Fae.

Robbie Forester and the Outlaws of Sherwood Street by Peter Abrahams
Robbie Forester comes in possession of a special bracelet that seems to grant magic powers when justice needs to be served. When a rich real estate investor begins buying up (and strong arming) local businesses; Robbie and her mismatched group of friends fight back, Robin Hood style. A quick read, this story does ask the reader to suspend a great deal of belief. I liked how Robbie is a not necessarily rich but sees the issues of poverty and inequality in her neighborhood and with her friends. A good read for those who like realistic fiction with a dose of magic and putting it to the bad guys. MS

The Young Elites by Marie Lu
Wow -this book took me a bit to get into but once I was in I was hooked. It was a lot darker than I was expecting, very Game of Thrones -violence wise. The violence was pretty brutal and almost casual in some sense but I liked the political intrigue and the how the author didn't shy away from the nasty side of discrimination and revolution.
The story is mostly told from the point of view Adelina Amouteru, who has been marked by the blast plague. Those marked by the plague are cursed and reviled in The Sealands. Those who are marked that develop supernatural powers are even more reviled. Adelina is running away from home after her father has sold her to a local merchant because he can not marry her off. When confronted by her father, Adelina's powers manifest and he is killed. She is quickly captured by the Inquisition Axis, a gestapo like group that hunts down those that have been marked especially those that have powers called Elites. Adelina is rescued by a group of Elites who train her in her newly discovered powers so they use her to kill the King and Queen and take over the country. Then Teran, the leader of the Inquisition, kidnaps Violetta, Adelina's sister and uses her as a pawn to get Adelina to betray the Elites. HS

Well one of them anyways...Captain America: The Winter Soldier Ultimate Collection. This is not the book based on the movie it is the collection of comic books that is loosely related to the film. I love, love, love the film and I knew going into the reading of this book that it would be different so I was prepared. I liked the book especially Sharon Carter Agent 13. She has a much bigger presence in this collection than in the movie universe (so far). I prefer Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury; this one was okay. What I disliked was the origin story of Bucky, which ended up being very different from what was presented in the Captain America movies. Overall, I enjoyed the book but it is not my favorite. I am really digging the Hawkeye series by Matt Fraction and the new Black Widow 2014 though and would highly recommend those as well. MS/HS
The Cloak Society by Jeramey Kraatz
Soooo what do you do when you are the only son of super villains but you are starting to think that being a super villain isn't really for you? This is Alex's problem in a nut shell. He is under pressure to control his super powers and be a good (bad?) super villain but after he impulsively saves a super heroine in training during his first big battle he starts to have second thoughts about the whole being evil thing. Alex must discover just how bad are his parents and if he has the guts to go good. Similar to the comic book series The Runways --there is lots of action and some reflection on the nature of good and evil and doing the right thing even when it is against your family. MS
Egg & Spoon by Gregory Maguire
The lives of two girls (one peasant and one privileged) collide in this fantastic fairytale of Russia. When Cat's train is stranded outside Elena's poor village a tentative friendship is started. When Elena ends up on the train headed for St Petersburg and Cat runs into the witch Baba Yaga the adventure begins. With a firebird, an ice dragon, a prince, and an imprisoned monk this story has something for everyone but Baba Yaga really steals the show. Funny and insightful a great meaty read for those who like adventure and magic as well as great characters. MS/HS
