So before I head off for the summer in the land of no internet (my mom's house) so it will be difficult to post weekly I am going to post this last Recent Reads. I will try to post during the summer if I am able to find a computer and internet for an extended period of time. Otherwise I will post again in August. Happy summer and happy reading!

Simon vs The Homo Sapiens Agenda by Becky Albertalli
"It's a weirdly subtle conversation. I almost don't notice I am being blackmailed." When Simon neglects to log out of his email on a library computer a fellow student reads his email and discovers he is gay. Navigating blackmail threats and friend drama along with trying to figure out who the mystery boy he has been emailing, Simon is having a very crazy junior year. The characters are great --especially Simon --he is funny and sweet. A coming of age coming out first romance kind of story. HS **** Best Read this round.

Winter Town by Stephen Emond
The story opens on New Year's Eve with Evan saying goodbye to his best friend from childhood, Lucy. Since her parents' divorce, he only sees her once a year during the Christmas holidays. We jump to the next year where it is once again Christmas and Lucy has just arrived. Evan sneaks out to see her, but things are different this year. Lucy looks and acts differently and their relationship is changing. The story is mostly told from Evans point of view until it switches at a dramatic point 3/4 of the way through the book to Lucy's point of view. There are drawings and comic strips interspersed throughout the novel which bring some humor and lightness to the story. The novel ends after switching back to Evan's point of view and the following Christmas holidays. A quiet coming of age story where the main character struggles with changing friendships and family relationships as he becomes his own person. HS

Robbie Forester and the Outlaws of Sherwood Street by Peter Abrahams
Robbie Forester comes in possession of a special bracelet that seems to grant magic powers when justice needs to be served. When a rich real estate investor begins buying up (and strong arming) local businesses; Robbie and her mismatched group of friends fight back, Robin Hood style. A quick read, this story does ask the reader to suspend a great deal of belief. I liked how Robbie is a not necessarily rich but sees the issues of poverty and inequality in her neighborhood and with her friends. A good read for those who like realistic fiction with a dose of magic and putting it to the bad guys. MS

The Young Elites by Marie Lu
Wow -this book took me a bit to get into but once I was in I was hooked. It was a lot darker than I was expecting, very Game of Thrones -violence wise. The violence was pretty brutal and almost casual in some sense but I liked the political intrigue and the how the author didn't shy away from the nasty side of discrimination and revolution.
The story is mostly told from the point of view Adelina Amouteru, who has been marked by the blast plague. Those marked by the plague are cursed and reviled in The Sealands. Those who are marked that develop supernatural powers are even more reviled. Adelina is running away from home after her father has sold her to a local merchant because he can not marry her off. When confronted by her father, Adelina's powers manifest and he is killed. She is quickly captured by the Inquisition Axis, a gestapo like group that hunts down those that have been marked especially those that have powers called Elites. Adelina is rescued by a group of Elites who train her in her newly discovered powers so they use her to kill the King and Queen and take over the country. Then Teran, the leader of the Inquisition, kidnaps Violetta, Adelina's sister and uses her as a pawn to get Adelina to betray the Elites. HS

Well one of them anyways...Captain America: The Winter Soldier Ultimate Collection. This is not the book based on the movie it is the collection of comic books that is loosely related to the film. I love, love, love the film and I knew going into the reading of this book that it would be different so I was prepared. I liked the book especially Sharon Carter Agent 13. She has a much bigger presence in this collection than in the movie universe (so far). I prefer Samuel L. Jackson's Nick Fury; this one was okay. What I disliked was the origin story of Bucky, which ended up being very different from what was presented in the Captain America movies. Overall, I enjoyed the book but it is not my favorite. I am really digging the Hawkeye series by Matt Fraction and the new Black Widow 2014 though and would highly recommend those as well. MS/HS
