Get Happy by Mary Amato
Ok so now I have the Partridge Family song in my head..."c'mon now and meet everybody" (which for some reason I though included "get happy" but it doesn't but it should). I guess it is appropriate because this is a very musical book. The story opens with Minerva on her sixteenth birthday. She is hoping very much for a ukulele but she gets a sweater instead. She also gets a package in the mail from her long lost father. She realizes that he --her father - is back in the area and he wants to get to know her but her mother has always maintained that he is a Bad Guy. Her friend Fin, talks her into auditioning with him for a job entertaining at birthday parties where she meets Hayes and Cassie. And things are going well but secrets and lies are exposed and Minerva must deal with the past one way or another. The book includes original songs with lyrics and chords. You can also hear the songs from the book on the author's website.

Blue has grown up in a family of psychics. Blue is not psychic but an amplifier. She makes others' gifts stronger. Also there is that little matter of a prophecy that says if she kisses her true love he will die. So weird is normal for her. But then she gets involved with the Raven Boys. Throw in a ghost, the search for an ancient Welsh king and ley lines and normal just got a little bit weirder. Maggie Stiefvater does a great job creating interesting characters and giving just enough information to keep you reading. She allows the reader to make connections and figure things out as the story develops. MS/HS

I was so excited to get Book 2 of Sally Green's Half Bad World, Half Wild. The story picks up where book 1 left off. Nathan who has just received the three gifts from his evil father, wakes up covered in blood next to the hunter who was chasing him. He doesn't know if his friend Gabriel is still alive and he is determined to save Annalise before it is too late. The opening sets the tone for the whole book --violent and bloody as Nathan fights to survive and then must decide to join a rebel group fighting against the corrupt White Witches. Not for the faint of heart or those with a sensitive stomach. HS -violence
Egg & Spoon by Gregory Maguire
The lives of two girls (one peasant and one privileged) collide in this fantastic fairytale of Russia. When Cat's train is stranded outside Elena's poor village a tentative friendship is started. When Elena ends up on the train headed for St Petersburg and Cat runs into the witch Baba Yaga the adventure begins. With a firebird, an ice dragon, a prince, and an imprisoned monk this story has something for everyone but Baba Yaga really steals the show. Funny and insightful a great meaty read for those who like adventure and magic as well as great characters. MS/HS

Will in Scarlet by Matthew Cody is a great addition to the stories of Robin Hood and his merry men. In this story Will Scarlet is the protagonist who meets and inspires the Robin Hood of legend. Will is the heir to a lord who is campaigning with King Richard when his castle is attacked by a minion of Lord John the King's brother. Will, on the run, is kidnapped by some bandits led by the cruel leader, Gilbert. Befriended somewhat by Much the miller's son (who is actually the miller's daughter in disguise); Will seeks his revenge on Lord Guy and the sheriff. Soon he will be forced to choose between his thirst for vengeance or saving his new found friends. MS
So I just read two very different graphic novels.
First, The Shadow Hero by Gene Luen Yang. This is your traditional super hero style comic. There is lots of action and daring do but also some thoughtful commentary on social issues of growing up as a Chinese American in the 1930s. This is a creation story for the Green Turtle the first Asian American superhero. Action, romance and villains abound. MS 7+/HS
Second book was Through the Woods by Emily Carroll. This is a collection of fairy tales meet horror stories. The stories are illustrated with vibrant creepy pictures that are woven into the text. Not for the faint of heart! MS/HS
So if you like girl assassin books I have a couple of good reads for you.
The first is Cruel Beauty by Rosamund Hodge. This a retelling of Beauty and the Beast with a bit of Greek Mythology thrown in. The setting is a pseudoGreek kingdom that is magically cut off from the rest of the world. A demon has had control of the land for centuries. Nyx has been betrothed to the demon Ignifex since birth but she has been secretly trained to as an assassin to kill him and free her people. But of course not everything is as it seems and Nyx must choose between her love for husband or her love of her family. Can she break the curse that holds everyone she loves in danger. HS
The second book is Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas. In this story, famed assassin Celaena Sardothien is offered a chance of freedom from the salt mine prison of Endovier. The King is looking for a new Champion so he is holding a contest and the last man (or woman) standing will be his new assassin. The Prince makes a deal with Celaena that if she wins she will only need to be the King's Champion for 4 years and then she will be free. Celaena jumps at the chance for freedom but there is evil at the castle and someone or something is killing off the competitors. Can Celaena last long enough for the final duel and will her freedom come at too great a price? MS/HS
