So I've had quite a mixed bag of books that I have read recently from YA coming of age to MS fantasy to YA horror.
So let's get started!
The Things You Kiss Goodbye by Leslie Connor
I have read another book by this same author and really enjoyed it so I was excited to read this one as well. I am glad I did. I liked the characters and thought they were realistic in their responses and actions. I also liked that it dealt with relationship violence as few books do and I feel it is important to see these things in a safe space such as books so we can have conversations about this issue that affects many of our students.
Bettina is excited when Brady, the star basketball player at school asks her out and they begin dating. Her parents are super strict but her father seems to like Brady and approves of their going out. In fact most of the time Bettina is out anymore is when she is with Brady. But things aren't as great as they seem. After running away from Brady one afternoon; Bettina meets Cowboy who is older and someone her parents would definitely not approve of. His friendship comes to mean a lot to her and things become even more complicated for Bettina. When tragedy strikes Bettina learns what love and family really mean. Mortal Danger by Ann Aguirre
So I started reading this without remembering it was a horror book so when things turned scary I was a little surprised. My first clue should have been the cover but I had forgotten the premise of the story and just picked it up out of my TBR pile. All in all it was a good story --usually not a huge horror fan but I liked the main character and the puzzle was interesting enough to keep me reading. I could have done without the "romance" as that felt a little flat to me.
Pushed to the brink by bullies, Edie has decided to end it all. When the mysterious and beautiful Kian approaches her with a Faustian deal she accepts with nothing to lose -or so she believes. Vowing revenge on those who tormented her, Edie is surprised at her mixed feelings when she starts getting to know her enemies. When really bad things start to happen Edie begins to realize that she has a lot to lose and some deals are better left unmade. Can she figure out how to beat the bad guys at their own game or will she see everyone she loves destroyed? HS Horror, Monsters, Relationships, Bullying, Revenge
